David Tennant's Doctor has only just regenerated, so he spends most of this one out of action while the Sycorax turn up in orbit and Earth has to cope without him. That leaves Rose, her mum Jackie and Mickey holding the fort, which they do with more heart than anyone expected. Russell T Davies bolts the Christmas Day format onto Doctor Who for good: a big alien threat, a newly arrived hero and a family audience in front of the telly. The Tenth Doctor's first proper hour is still thrilling stuff. Good big-screen viewing for families who like a few spaceships with their Christmas.
