It's the winter of 1919 and the household at Downton is trying to look festive while the world gets on with recovering from the war. Upstairs, the Crawleys fret about love and inheritance. Downstairs, a ouija board makes the servants' hall wonderfully strange. Bates's fate hangs over everything, and Lady Mary is finally forced to face her heart. Julian Fellowes serves up tragedy, romance and Maggie Smith zingers in one big Christmas Day helping. Best saved for a long evening and a very large tea.
